Contiki Day 15: Munich to Swiss Alps August 18, 2006

On the bus early this morning to head to Switzerland! We stopped in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, for lunch. There was a volleyball tournament on, Australia were playing.

Liechtenstein is famous for its stoned cows but they passed a law so you can’t feed them cannabis anymore. (Random fact of the day)

Anyway so Dave told us about a good place to have a sandwich for lunch so we stopepd ther. After attempting to interpret the menu, we went to order our meals. Firstly, the waiter completely ignored Kasi and didn’t take her order, and she stormed in after him and he ushered her back to her seat saying “I come, I come!” then didn’t come back for ages…. Kristy & kasi asked for brown bread on their sandwiches, but instead, the waiter came out with a basket of brown bread. It was hilarious. I thought I was safe when I ordered a hamburger and fries, but when the waitress brought it out to the table, we all burst out laughing. My “hamburger” was simply a meat pattie on a plate!! No bread. Just a lump of meat in the middle of the plate. Tasted great though. Dave walked out, looked at me with a very strange expression on his face and put a plate of fries down in front of me… then walked off. Um… thanks Dave? Funny boy, he’s grown on me.

I was five minutes late for the bus because of the boys, AND I didn’t leave enough time to get my passport stamped for 2 Francs. Annoyed about that!!! We stopped at Lucern, one of the most beautiful places in the world, I love it. Skipped the swiss army knife demonstration and hit the shops instead. Bought myself a cute little red top… happy birthday to me? Dave gave us all Swiss chocolates on the bus and gave me the left overs, yum. Didn’t have very long in Lucern which sucks, but then we headed off to Lauterbrunnen, which is also beautiful so I guess that’s ok. I got a birthday cake at dinner! With 5 candles…ahem. We celebrated at ‘the bombshelter’ that night (the pub downstairs)… you have to walk through the laundry and past the showers to get to it. Didn’t pay for any drinks tonight which was awesome… extended birthdays rock, I think I will have to adopt Clare’s family tradition of a ‘birthday octave’.

Oh I also cut a chunk of flesh out of my finger… my razor had fallen out of the ziplock bag  I put it in ,and I stuck my hand in my bag and… well… ouch. I was running around with my hand in the air like a maniac asking if anyone had a bandaid, and in the end, turns out I had one myself. Idiot.

Contiki Day 14: Austrian Tyrol to Munich August 17, 2006

Left Austria this morning, and stopped at the Swarovski crystal museum (Katie & I didn’t waste our money going in…apparently it wasn’t that exciting). I bought myself a bracelet, just a cheap one but its nice… it sparkles :-) After another few hours on the bus, we stopped at a concentration camp in Germany. It was really strange, walking through the gas chambers disguised as showers…. it honestly felt eerie. When we finally got to Munich, we only had a few hours in the city!! Subway for lunch, then a spot of shopping. Rachel & I went ot the Hard Rock Cafe because the poor deprived soul has never been to one before. And we went to a ‘Farmacie’ so I could get cream for this weird rash which is spreading over my arm…. eek. I had a banana smoothie but it just wasn’t the same as the ones from home. I’m dying for Boost or NZ natural banana smoothies.

At 5pm the Glockenspiel went off. i want that 5 minutes of my life back. Haha nah its amazing how its 600-something years old and is powered by hydrolics. I don’t even know if that’s true, I just heard some American tourist tell his kid that. Katie & I were the only ones who didn’t go to the Bavarian Beer Hall for dinner (my reason: too expensive, Katie’s reason: actually I don’t know why she didn’t go). Instead, we found ‘Cafe Am Nordbad’, had a fantastic meal and a Chi Chi cocktail… they were 15euros each but so worth it. It was nice to have a relaxing dinner just the two of us. Back at the Hostel, when everyone had come back from the beer hall, we went to the pub downstairs and danced a fair bit. At midnight I got some Happy Birthday kisses and I was dikened a million times … I feel so violated… but it was fun :-p wish I’d taken a photo when most of the boys had their shirts off.

Heidelberg and the Romantische Straße July 21, 2006

Okay well… over the past couple of days we’ve been to Heidelberg, Nördlinger and Dinkelsbühl on the Romatische Straße, very interesting and nice scenery but spent way too long on the bus… its been like 35 degrees, boiling hot during the day. But the most exciting thing happened yesterday… Omi told us there was a ’surprise’ for us in the Rathaus (town hall) so we rocked up at about 9am… and I would have never ever guessed who was waiting for us there… Mum and Dad!!!!!!! I guess they missed us so much they had to fly over to germany to see us. Hahahah.

They hired a car, so tomorrow we’re off on a road trip with them for 8 or 9 days I dont remember, we’re going to Prague, Vienna, Innsbruck, Lucerne, Venice and Milan… oh my god… so no updates for the next week or so!!!

Today marks the beginning of the Erbacher Wiesenmarkt (its kinda like the Ekka…happens once a year and its a big beer drinking fest with rides and stuff) in the next town, Erbach (pronounced kinda like ‘abba’ when you say it quickly). That sentence didnt make sense but i dont really care. It goes until the 30th of July. We might check it out for a few hours this afternoon after lunch, then we’re going back to Mechtild’s house coz one of Omi’s cousins, Sigrid, will be there so mum and dad can meet her.

Cruising down the Rhein July 17, 2006

Saturday was our Rhein cruise! We got up at 4.30am (I had to drag myself out of bed) and we had to walk to where the bus picked us up at 6am. After we were finally on our way to Köln city, we decided to ask around to see if anyone spoke English. The bus was packed with senior citizens (Aimee and I were the only ones under 65…hahahah) so I wasnt very hopeful. But it turned out that the lady sitting behind us, the first person we asked ’sprechen Sie Englisch?’ spoke the most English out of everyone on the bus! We chatted to her for a little while, and found out her name was Helene. We decided taht the safest thing to do would be to stick with her.

After about two hours on the bus, we stopped for a short break. The oldies (its an affectionate name!) were well prepared, they had a tablecloth set up on a tree stump, with coffee, orange saft (orange juice), bread rolls and a german sausage. ‘You taste German sausage!!’ cried Helene. So we did… haha I dropped my roll on the grass but the 10 second rule applied so I still ate it. Another two hours on the bus and we finally arrived in Köln. We had a bit over an hour before the schifffahrt (boat trip), so we went with Helene’s posse to find a nice cafe. Helene shouted us a cola each, which was nice of her.

Anyway the cruise was great!!! The tour guide spoke in German AND English, thank god. We sat on the top deck and had to borrow some sunscreen from the old lady in the red jacket, whose bag contained EVERYTHING I swear it was bottomless, and aimee still managed to get a tan. The cruise only went for an hour, so we had 5 hours to look around the city before the bus took us home again. Köln is the home of a massive gothic cathedral, the Köln Dom (pronounced ‘Dome’ but with a german accent) There was a festival going on in the city… the Rainbow Lounge…and it didn’t take us very long to figure out that it was a gay and lesbian festival. It was absolutely hilarious, our group of grannies, walking hesitantly through the gay slash lesbian crowd…we must have stuck out terribly!!!!! hahahah.

So anyway we had a look in the cathedral after we had something for lunch at the Chicago Steakhouse, and Helene bought us an English brochure of information on the Dom. We killed some more time by doing a bit of window shopping. Helene stopped us at a 4711 store, and explained that Köln was the home of 4711! cool. we mentioned that Omi likes 4711, and Helene said we should buy some for her. I thought that was a good idea, so we were ushered inside. We found a nice gift pack, ‘You like?’ Helene asked, and i said yes it’s nice, and continued to look around the store. I thought I may as well buy the gift pack, it was only €9 and Omi would appreciate it. So I went up to the counter to pay, BUT Helene had already paid!!! She wouldnt accept our money, and, furthermore, bought us a 5ml bottle of 4711 for €1 each, before we could blink.

Stunned, we walked outside and not much futher down the street was a clothes store called Madonna. Out the front were tshirts with Germany printed on them. Helene pointed them out. ‘You like? What size?? Take back to Australia to remember Germany!’ … no amount of complaining, begging or pleading would have stopped her from buying them for us!! AFter that, when we stopped at an Eis cafe, we insisted on paying. Helene had a Spaghetti Cabonara Eis (i thought spaghetti bolonaise eis was outrageous!) and Aimee and i shared a Schoko Edbeer (chocolate and vanilla ice cream, fresh strawberries, and chocolate syrup..in a MASSIVE cup…it was like a meal in itself).

What a day…but…it wasnt over yet… the bus trip back home, aimee and i were singing ABBA songs the entire way…and it distracted us so much that we MISSED OUR STOP. So… 11pm at night, with a bus driver who didnt speak english, all we could say was ‘Michelstadt!!’ and he said something unintelligable and we pretty much wanted to die coz we didnt know where the hell we were and we were the last two peopel on the bus…the bus driver made a phone call and then said somethign to me, all i got was ‘my wife’ and ‘car’.. and i was hoping to dear god that he said my wife will drive you home in her car. I was right….sigh…..we paid the driver €5 and his wife the same. I felt terrible… and when we got back to Michelstadt we ran all the way home coz it was dark and scary. The walk that would normally take about 10 mins we ran in about 2…haha. Well..til next time, auf weidersehen!!!!

finally the internet!!! the kezboard is so weird. okay the y is in the wrong spot, there is a z there instead. lol why would they do that to me it takes longer to type. its so cool here. There are trees bloody everywhere!!1 and they are so green. and its so pretty. there is a schwimmenbad, swimming pool, just up the road from where were staying, we might go for a swim on montag (monday), its hot enough!!!! i shouldve brought more pairs of shorts because im boiling in jeans and a singlet top. in the forest area there is this spring of water which is the purest water i will ever taste, according to my Omi. tastes pretty darn good.i am about 10 mins walk from the ‘city’ which is so tiny but very cute. we are in a town called michelstadt which is where my grandma was born. ive met heaps of relatives, in fact today we just left my grandmas sisters house. shes so cute! she smokes more packets of cigarettes a day than I can count… Europeans are big smokers i’ve noticed :-P

its really hard though because hardly anyone speaks english, cept the guy here at the internet cafe place, (which isnt really an internet cafe its just a cafe with one computer where you can use the net, the real internet cafe next door has closed down..insert sad smiley face here..) hahahah the guy who works here just put a song from the movie priscilla on. they all listen to english music, i havent heard one german song. thank god, its the only english i hear. the past few days my sis and i have just been sitting down listening to these crazy german people screaming at 100 miles an hour in german at each other.

ive learnt a few words of german, aimee knows more than i do i think. its nearlz 4pm here… €1,20 per half hour of internet. i think i’lll use an hour hmm i better make it worth it then!

I’ve been fed SO MUCH food!!! and these people drink coffee at least 10 times a day… i dont drink coffee (kaffe) so they give me tea (tee) instead. which is okay but i think i’ll have a klein (small) cup from now on instead of a groß (large) cup!! nein, danke, no more tee for me. but oohhh the food. bread and jam for breakfast, the best home made jam ive ever tasted, always sausages and meat and yuuuummm its so good. morning and afternoon tea, and eis (ice cream) all the time, theyre obsessed with Eis. Aimee and I had some schokolade eis this morning(chocolate ice cream) it was so yummy it was from this italian place called dolomitos or something. they make the best cakes, too… and they dont just make one, u have like a choice of ten different cakes.

Anyway, emails to write… and Aimee wants the internet now! Tchuss!

I think… due to my decreasing funds available for my holiday planned for June, that I’m not going to be able to afford to stay overseas long enough to experience Oktoberfest at the end of September (why is Oktoberfest in September??)!

:-( Unless some miracle occurs, and I win the lottery (this site GUARANTEES that if you follow their method you will win the lottery) or something, I’m going to have to come back to the land of Oz early September, after my contiki tour around Europe. Oh, the tour I want to do is the European Experience. Okay just got majorly distracted… trying to find out where I will be on my 19th birthday!!! It will be day 12 on tour:

Day 12: Venice to Austrian Tyrol: Today we leave Italy and travel over the spectacular Brenner Pass. Take the opportunity to go white water rafting in the heart of the Austrian Alps before a special welcome awaits at Contiki’s own Gasthof.

How bloody fantastic.
